About The Flame Journal

The Flame Journal, or 薪火志 in Chinese, aims to make Chinese living heritage easier to understand. We begin with cultural practices, connect them with people and objects, and provide sources for further checking. The Flame Journal translates Chinese copy in full into English, drawing on Chinese-language sources. We explain cultural context for readers outside China and retain Chinese names that readers can use to check the sources. Read our sources and translation policy to learn how we handle evidence, translation and corrections.

Public education comes first. The Flame Journal currently operates solely to promote Chinese culture, with no commercial relationships. We receive no commissions from external links, gifts or promotional payments. Buying guidance serves readers who want to take their interest further. We do not guarantee a person’s identity or a product’s authenticity solely on the basis of a label or title. One Flame. All Lands. This is the idea we want to carry forward.
