From apprenticeship to teaching: reading Zhou Shuangxi’s Yunjin record

This short article draws on an official biography and a Xinhua report; it is not an interview conducted by The Flame Journal with Zhou Shuangxi (周双喜). The two sources provide different evidence: personal recognition and career history, and a dated example of teaching.

Begin with the apprenticeship

The China Intangible Cultural Heritage Website biography records that Zhou Shuangxi entered a factory as an apprentice in 1973, learning from Gu Huiyuan (顾惠源), and began researching and reproducing historic silk textiles in 1983. This history connects learning to weave with studying older textiles. When reading it, distinguish when he began learning from the work he later took part in.

Reproduction does not make a new textile an original artefact

The official biography records his involvement in reproducing fabric for historic robes. “Reproduction” here means studying and making something anew. It does not mean that the new textile is the original artefact or that the original has been conserved. When viewing an exhibit, check whether its label identifies an original, a reproduction or a new work made using traditional techniques.

One useful question for the exhibitor is: what evidence informed the reproduction, which structures and processes are directly documented, and where did researchers need to exercise judgement? The biography does not answer these questions point by point, and this article does not draw conclusions about a particular reproduction project on their behalf.

Teaching carries experience forward

A Xinhua report published on 4 August 2026 records Zhou’s team training younger and middle-aged weavers and offering Yunjin weaving courses at Nanjing Mochou Secondary Vocational School (南京市莫愁中等专业学校). This is an example of teaching at the time of the report, not current enrolment, booking or demonstration information.

Consider how learners move from individual actions to working in pairs: who observes the practice, what needs correcting, and how do they check that their coordination has completed the intended weaving step? These are our editorial reading questions. They need specific answers from teachers or learners.

Keep personal and project references separate

The official personal record identifies Zhou Shuangxi as a third-batch national representative bearer, with personal reference 03-1307. The associated Yunjin project has reference Ⅷ-13, with Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, as the submitting area. A person’s recognition batch cannot replace the project’s batch, and personal recognition does not automatically establish that a textile for sale was made by that person.

Read this alongside our introduction to Nanjing Yunjin. First understand the roles above and below the loom, then consider how learning and teaching work through specific actions. The Flame Journal has no commercial relationship or partnership with the person discussed and has not verified current classes, bookings or sales channels.
