Jiajiang bamboo paper: from raw material to learning

On this page

Jiajiang bamboo paper (夹江竹纸) concerns handmade papermaking in Jiajiang County, Sichuan. The official project account identifies young bamboo as the principal raw material and describes production from material selection to finished sheets. Begin with three questions: what is the paper made from, how does a sheet take shape, and how do makers learn judgement and coordination?

From a material name to a particular stage

“Bamboo paper” offers a clue to the raw material, but does not answer every question about an individual sheet. When reading a production account, note the material, its condition after processing and the next action. Do not infer unstated proportions, processing conditions or tools from the finished colour.

Then read about Jing County Xuan paper and compare the materials and stages described in the two articles. Keep the places and practice names attached to your notes. Do not treat all handmade calligraphy and painting papers as the same paper, or rank quality from the word “handmade”.

Observe sheet-making, not only the finished sheet

At a demonstration with adequate explanation, first ask whether you are seeing material preparation, wet-sheet formation, or subsequent drying and finishing. Use three columns for material, action and result, recording what the presenter actually explains. If you only see a sheet being lifted, ask what happened before that moment rather than supplying a recipe yourself.

This is an observation method, not an operating guide. Follow on-site instructions and do not independently touch heated surfaces, processing liquids or equipment. For a particular paper’s intended use, consult its own description and samples; a general craft account is not a product test.

A dated account of learning

A report published by Jiajiang’s culture, sports and tourism bureau on 20 June 2022 describes bamboo-paper training at Daqian Zhi Guli (大千纸故里) in Macun town on 16–17 June, attended by 26 people working in the paper industry. The report distinguishes theoretical and practical instruction, and mentions visits to drying and finishing processes and learning about sheet-forming.

This is a specific setting in which practitioners continued learning. Note separately who attended, what they saw, and what they practised or discussed. Attendance does not demonstrate everyone’s proficiency, and a two-day event does not establish a standard course length. We did not attend or assess the participants; the historical report is not a current registration notice.

Read place, process and use together

The official project page associates young bamboo and manual sheet-scooping with Jiajiang. In its Fuyang discussion, it separately names danglian dalang fa (荡帘打浪法), a sheet-forming method involving movement of the screen and waves. These passages concern different places: the latter term should not simply be assigned to Jiajiang. It is cited here to identify which passage a term belongs to, without supplying unverified operating steps. (Checked 2026-10-01.)

Before a demonstration, organise the source into three columns: place, action and result. Ask the presenter to identify the local method being shown and how it connects with the stages before and after it. Then ask which inks and brushwork suit the paper in front of you, rather than inferring its use from an account of another region’s paper. A process description, a particular sample and a product description need to be checked together; the name “bamboo paper” alone does not merge them.

Identify the record

The State Council’s first national list of 2006 names Jiajiang County, Sichuan, and Fuyang, Zhejiang, under entry 421, reference Ⅷ-71, bamboo papermaking (竹纸制作技艺). Our recognition card records Jiajiang only. It does not merge in Fuyang’s regional information or treat recognition of the practice as certification of an individual maker or product.

Continue with the recognition guide. Before visiting, separately check the current location, opening arrangements and participation conditions using our visit guide. We have no commercial relationship with the institutions mentioned and provide no course booking or product recommendation here.
